I manage a fast food place. I was out for a few days, and we had a new employee starting. My assistant manager hired and trained them — part of [Assistant Manager]’s training to run her own store — so I’d had no contact with this person. I just knew they existed and their resume was pretty good.
The day before I went back to work, I had to stop by the store to pick up some paperwork before a meeting. I was not super happy; I had to go to a last-minute meeting on my day off. I was also not dressed well. I had told my boss, “I’m in vacation mode. Deal,” so I was in ratty jeans and a ratty T-shirt, hadn’t brushed my hair yet, and looked a little hung over.
The new girl was at the front counter. I didn’t even look at the poor girl; I just walked past the counter into the back and slammed the office door behind me. My employees are used to my grumps. They find it funny at this point and tease me.
Supposedly, I scared this girl so bad that she ran out front until [Assistant Manager] noticed her. She thought some crazy chick was trying to rob us.
I bought the poor girl some ice cream and apologized. And then, I got teased about being a monster for a solid month.
